Anedi Mfon, a 25-year-old man from Calabar, Cross River State, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping an eight-year-old girl.
The Chief Judge of the Calabar High Court, Justice Blessing Egwu, sentenced Aniedi to prison on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, after his trial for the September 27, 2022 offence.
In his judgement, Justice Egwu lamented the many confiscation cases. The court fined the survivors one (1) million naira.
This case was handled by the Fundamental Rights Council Initiative (BRCI), a non-profit organization dedicated to combating exploitation, witchcraft, human rights violations and other forms of oppression. Responding to the lawsuit, the Chief Counsel of BRIC, Barrister James Ibor, commended the Cross River State Command of the Nigeria Police, led by CP Gyogon Grimah.
Ibor said the verdict was a fair trial and a victory for the survivors and their families who resisted bribery and intimidation in their fight for justice. He also thanked the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ededem Ani, the BRCI team and the prosecutors; Emmanuel Akpama for his dedication and faithfulness during the trial and prosecution of the case.
