Trump fined another $1,000 for violating gag order in secret money case, judge warns of possible jail sentence
The judge presiding over Donald Trump's money laundering trial fined him $1,000 for violating the gag order and warned the former president that any further violations could land him in jail. The fine is the second time Trump has been punished for making comments against witnesses since the trial began last month. He was fined $9,000 last week for nine violations.
Judge Juan M. Merchan warned on Monday, May 6, that any further violations of the restraining order could lead to prison time, but "that's the last thing I want to do.
" The trial entered its third week of testimony Monday as prosecutors questioned their star witness, former Trump lawyer and personal financier Michael Cohen, who pleaded guilty to the charges federal agency dealing with cash flow. Cohen is expected to be heavily cross-examined by defense attorneys to undermine his credibility with the jury.
Trump faces 34 felony charges of falsifying business records related to payments made to conceal embarrassing information. Prosecutors said Trump's company, the Trump Organization, reimbursed Cohen for payments he made to porn star Stormy Daniels, and gave Cohen cash and other payments. Prosecutors say the transactions were incorrectly recorded in company records as legal fees. Trump has pleaded not guilty and denies incest or wrongdoing.
