Federal Government opens Port Harcourt-Aba railway for passengers



The Port Harcourt-Aba railway line has been put into service by the Federal Government following the completion of rehabilitation which is part of ongoing works on the 1,443km Port Harcourt-Maiduguri narrow gauge railway project.   According to reports

 The railway is part of the Federal Government's intensified efforts to boost trade, improve mobility and accessibility and ensure connectivity between the Southern and North Eastern parts of the country. At the commissioning of the renovated 62km railway corridor on Tuesday, the Minister of Transport, Said Alkali, said they are in talks with investors to convert locomotives from diesel to CNG to further reduce transport costs. Alkali also undertook the rail journey from Port Harcourt to Aba, saying this marks the commencement of passenger train services along the corridor. The corridor will be connected to Enugu Port and will also be connected to  Onne and Port Harcourt ports to facilitate trade. He said; “We give glory to God for coming here to commission the train operation from Port Harcourt to Aba.” “And I would like to thank the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his support and dedication to the Ministry of Transport in providing assistance to the people of this great country.” “The Eastern Narrow Gauge Railway covers his five geopolitical zones of the country including South-South, South-East, North-Central, North-West and North-East.” “So, this is very significant for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.Today marks the first time that the Railway Corporation is entering the South-South region and we are happy to see this section operational. ” “So, I am ready.
